《剑桥中国史》第15 卷序
第14 卷《剑桥中国史》阐述了到1965 年文化大革命前夕为止的中国共
产党改造社会的历史。那个时候，这个国家似乎已从“大跃进”的灾难中恢
复了元气，当局正在着手实施其耽搁了的第三个“五年计划”。尽管中国在
此前与苏联分道扬镳，但它看起来还只是一个变异的斯大林模式的国家。实
际上，包括最高领导层在内的所有中国人，以及全部外国观察家都没有意识
到，毛泽东即将发动一场运动，以改变那种形象，这是一场除了牺牲生命以
外，在各个方面都将比以往所经历过的任何运动破坏更为严重的运动。
文化大革命的先兆已在第14 卷中作了分析。在第15 卷里，我们力图追
溯依然只为大多数中国人尚不完全理解的一连串事情。我们从分析共产党夺
取政权以后毛的思想的发展入手，致力于理解他发动这一运动的原因。我们
紧紧把握住相互对立的观点：当时人们赞颂文化大革命的说法和以后回顾时

我们接着考察毛的革命在他1976 年逝世后又如何为一个新的革命所继
续。毛为了在精神上改造中国作了最后的努力，并孤注一掷，而他的继承者
邓小平开创了一个全新的道路。他打开了中国的大门，努力从经济上改造这
个国家。文化大革命远没有使中国人变得更为革命，其结果，似乎是使他们

本卷是涉及19 和20 世纪的第6 卷，也是最后一卷，至少对这一版本的
《剑桥中国史》来说是这样。与以前一样，我们的注脚表明我们从别人那里
获益匪浅。我们也乐于指出，由于在过去10 年里北京坚持开放政策的结果，
